Welcome to Georgia

I have called Georgia home for more than 26 years, but Puerto Rico has always remained an important part of who I am. When I first moved here, finding Puerto Rican food, familiar products, and pieces of our culture wasn't always easy. Over the years, I have watched our community grow and become much more visible.

Today, Puerto Rican restaurants, bakeries, businesses, festivals, and communities can be found throughout Georgia, particularly around Metro Atlanta.

This guide is my way of sharing what I've discovered along the way — where to enjoy a good mofongo, find pan sobao and familiar products, celebrate our culture, and connect with the Puerto Rican community.

Georgia is home, but it's always nice to have a little piece of Puerto Rico nearby.

A Taste of the Panadería

Few things bring back memories of Puerto Rico quite like walking into a panadería — the smell of fresh pan sobao, a warm quesito with your coffee, or picking up a box of pastries to take home.

Super Mercado Ruelas #2 — Lawrenceville
A neighborhood Latin supermarket carrying broader Hispanic pantry products and specialty ingredients.

Supermercado El Tapatio — Lawrenceville
A much larger Latin market with produce, butcher counter, bakery, tortillas and a broad Latin American grocery selection.

Talpa Supermarkets - Plaza Fiesta Mall — Buford Highway / Atlanta
Inside Plaza Fiesta, with a wide range of Latino pantry staples plus fresh foods.

Brito Supermarket # 2 — Brookhaven / Buford Highway
A smaller Latino grocery that is useful as part of a broader Buford Highway shopping trip.

Jalisco Super Market — Norcross
Primarily Mexican but also carrying ingredients from other Latin American countries.

Craving Puerto Rican Favorites

• Coco Rico
  Walmart and Mega Buying ATL currently lists several sizes and multipacks on selected locations.
• India Kola Champagne
  For the India brand specifically—the Puerto Rican one you were asking about—I found it online through Instacart/Supremo Foods. Walmart also lists India Kola Champagne six-packs, although availability varies.

Puerto Rican Events in Georgia

SanSe Atlanta
Ser Familia describes SanSe Atlanta as Atlanta's largest Puerto Rican festival, inspired by the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián in Old San Juan. The event features Puerto Rican food, music, cultural performances and community activities while raising funds for Ser Familia.

The 2026 SanSe Atlanta took place on June 20, 2026, at Ameris Bank Amphitheatre in Alpharetta. The entertainment included Elvis Crespo, DJ EU and Pleneros de la Central, along with Puerto Rican food, drinks and cultural programming.

Ser Familia

Ser Familia is a nonprofit serving Latino families in Georgia and Puerto Rico. It has operated for about 25 years, reports serving more than 80,000 people, and currently lists Georgia locations in Kennesaw, Smyrna, College Park, Lawrenceville and Norcross. Its services include mental-health support, family programs, parenting services, youth programs and education.

Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights

The Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights (GLAHR) is broader than the Puerto Rican community. It is a grassroots organization focused primarily on education, organization, advocacy and civil/human rights issues affecting Georgia's Latino immigrant communities.

Why So Many Puerto Ricans Have Chosen Georgia

Georgia has become an increasingly popular home for Puerto Ricans, particularly in Metro Atlanta. The region offers a strong job market, diverse suburban communities, major universities, a growing Latino population, and a cost of living that historically has been more affordable than many traditional Puerto Rican communities in the Northeast.

Family connections have also helped the community grow. As more Puerto Ricans settled in Georgia, relatives and friends followed, creating larger communities in places such as Gwinnett, Cobb, Fulton, DeKalb, Clayton, and Henry counties. Migration from Puerto Rico to the mainland also increased significantly following Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Atlanta's location adds another advantage: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport provides nonstop access to San Juan, making it relatively easy to stay connected with family and the island.

Today, Puerto Ricans arriving in Georgia find something that was much harder to find decades ago—a growing Boricua community with restaurants, bakeries, cultural events, businesses, and organizations that provide a little taste of home.
