José Miguel Agrelot

Born April 21, 1927 in San Juan. Died January 28, 2004. One of Puerto Rico's most beloved comedians, television personalities, and entertainers, better known as Don Cholito. Agrelot started working on radio stations when he was 14. Some of Agrelot's long list of shows include: "El Colegio de la Alegría" (The School of Joy), "El Profesor Colgate", "La Criada Malcriada" (The Nasty Maid), "Desafiando a los Genios" (Challenging the Geniuses), and "El Show del Mediodia" (The Midday Show). Although born in San Juan, his family maintained strong ties to Salinas throughout his life.

Luis Rafael Arcelay

A playwright, dramatist, and educator, Luis Rafael Arcelay made important contributions to Puerto Rican theater through works that explored the island's culture, history, and social issues. His plays continue to be appreciated by students and theater enthusiasts.

Juan Bautista Arrillaga Roqué

A writer, journalist, playwright, pharmacist, and abolitionist, Juan Bautista Arrillaga Roqué became an influential voice in Puerto Rico's autonomist movement. He helped expose the Spanish colonial government's repressive policies during the late 19th century and directed the newspaper El Águila de Puerto Rico. His works included Memorias de Antaño, Tierra Enferma, and Los Bribones.

Francisco Arriví

María Bibiana Benítez

1783–1873 · Aguadilla · Poet • Writer

Born December 10, 1783 in Aguadilla. Died April 18, 1873 in San Juan. Considered Puerto Rico's first female poet and playwright, María Bibiana Benítez was a pioneer of Puerto Rican literature during the 19th century. Her writings explored history, culture, and national identity. In 1832, Maria published her first poem, "La Ninfa de Puerto Rico". She also became the first Puerto Rican woman to write a dramatic play, "La Cruz del Morro" (The Cross of El Morro), inspired in the defense of San Juan against the Dutch attack in 1625. Among her best known poems are "Soneto" (1839), "Diálogo Alegórico" (1858) and "A La Vejez."

Milagros Carrillo

Known as "La Jibarita de Canóvanas," Milagros Carrillo was a singer of traditional Puerto Rican décimas and a dramatic actress who appeared in theater and television. Her work helped preserve and promote Puerto Rico's rural musical traditions.

Benicio del Toro

Born in Santurce, San Juan, Benicio del Toro is one of Puerto Rico's most internationally acclaimed actors. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Traffic (2000) and is also known for his performances in The Usual Suspects, 21 Grams, Sicario, Che, and the Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars film franchises.

Emilio Díaz Valcárcel

Acclaimed novelist, short-story writer, playwright, and educator born in Trujillo Alto. His work explored Puerto Rican society, migration, war, and modern life, establishing him as an important voice in twentieth-century Puerto Rican literature.

José Vicente Ferrer

1912–1992 · Santurce · Actor • Director • Producer

Actor, director, and producer noted for his Academy Award-winning performance in Cyrano de Bergerac (1950). Born January 8, 1912, in Santurce, Ferrer made his film debut with Ingrid Bergman in Joan of Arc in 1948, for which he received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Active in both theater and film, Ferrer portrayed Iago in a stage production of Othello (1943) and Toulouse-Lautrec in the film Moulin Rouge (1952). He directed the plays Stalag 17 (1951) and The Shrike (1952). His later films include Dune (1984). He died January 26, 1992, in Miami, Florida.

Raul Julía

1940–1994 · Santurce · Film • Theater

Born March 9, 1944 in San Juan. Juliá proved his versatility on both stage and screen. Raul Julia made his New York City debut in 1964 in a Spanish-language play. He worked on: Joseph Papp's New York Shakespeare Festival Macbeth (1966), Two Gentlemen of Verona (1971) for which he won the first of his four Tony nominations, Mack the Knife in The Threepenny Opera (1976). Julia's film career, which began in 1971, ran the gamut from the comic--The Gumball Rally (1976), The Addams Family (1991), and its sequel Addams Family Values (1993)--to the biographical--Romero (1988), in which he played the Salvadoran archbishop, and The Burning Season (1994), about Brazilian labor leader Chico Mendes--to the tragic--Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985). He died on October 24, 1994 in New York.

Luis Lloréns Torres

1876–1944 · Juana Díaz · Poetry • Literature

Born May 14, 1876 in Juana Díaz. Died June 16, 1944 in Santurce. One of Puerto Rico's greatest poets and playwrights, Luis Lloréns Torres helped define Puerto Rican literary identity through his poetry, essays, and nationalist writings. San Juan's famous public housing community bears his name.

He was a lawyer by profession, having studied in Spain. His work is known for its "criollismo", a kind of nationalism, and usually writing about the idiosincracy of the island. His books include Al Pie de la Alhambre, Sonetos Sinfónicos, Voces de la Campana Mayor, and Alturas de America. His "decimas" are works not only of art but of love. Among his most famous poems are Valle de Collores and Canción de las Antillas.

René Marqués

1919–1979 · Arecibo · Literature

Born October 4, 1919 in Arecibo. Died March 22, 1979 in San Juan. Award-winning playwright, novelist, and essayist whose works remain classics of Puerto Rican literature. Marques was a distinguished playwright, short story writer, novelist, and essayist. His best-known play, "La Carreta", opened in 1951 and helped secure his reputation as the leading literary figure in Puerto Rico during 1950s. In 1959 he published three plays together in the collection Teatro. These were "La muerte no entrará en palacio", "Un niño azul para esa sombra", and "Los soles truncos".

Elsa Miranda

1922–2007 · Influential Figure · Actress • Singer

Actress and singer born February 14, 1922. Miranda became widely known as one of the most famous performers to portray Miss Chiquita Banana. During 1945 and 1946, she made numerous personal appearances and appeared in films, radio programs, and commercials. She died April 27, 2007.

Lin-Manuel Miranda

Puerto Rican-American playwright, composer, actor, and creator of Hamilton and In the Heights. Although born in New York City, Miranda's family comes from Vega Alta, where he spent summers and Christmas holidays growing up. His continuing relationship with the town includes the Lin-Manuel Miranda Gallery in Vega Alta's historic center.

Juan José Osuna

Born in Caguas on June 24, 1884, Dr. Juan José Osuna became one of Puerto Rico's most influential educators and historians of education. After earning degrees in Pennsylvania and a doctorate from Columbia University, he returned to Puerto Rico and helped professionalize teacher education. He served as Dean of the University of Puerto Rico's School of Education from 1928 to 1945 and was acting president of the University of Puerto Rico from 1939 to 1940. His landmark book, A History of Education in Puerto Rico (1949), remains an important reference on the island's educational history. He died on June 19, 1950, in Arlington, Virginia. Schools and university buildings throughout Puerto Rico bear his name.

Gloria María Pagán Ferrer

Known professionally as Marigloria Palma, Pagán was a poet, playwright, storyteller, and painter. Her writing frequently drew inspiration from her childhood and surroundings in Canóvanas, including her autobiographical poetry collection Bolitas de Mármol.
