A Puerto Rican Taste Journey in Georgia

After living in Georgia for over 25 years, finding authentic Puerto Rican food in Georgia hasn’t always been easy. For years, I had to settle for “close enough” flavors from Dominican, Cuban, or general Latin restaurants. But Puerto Rican cuisine deserves its own spotlight. Wishing to reconnect with my culture and heritage, I’ve reignited my mission to find real Puerto Rican food right here in Atlanta.

I’ve begun this series, a continuously updated journey —one where I’ll discover, taste, and share Puerto Rican dining experiences across the state. From mofongo and tostones to arroz con gandules, pernil, and pasteles, I’ll explore not just the dishes, but also the ambiance, authenticity, ownership and stories behind each restaurant. Whether you’re craving a taste of home or simply curious about Puerto Rican flavors, you’ll find something here to savor.

As I explore restaurants across Georgia, I’ll share our experiences. Join me on this flavorful journey as I discover the places that bring a little piece of Puerto Rico to Georgia.

Stop #2: El Super Pan - Atlata, Georgia

As we arrive at El Super Pan, I immediately see hints of Puerto Rico everywhere—the Puerto Rican flag painted on a wall, a colorful vejigante mask hanging on another, and t-shirts with witty quotes and illustrations only Puerto Ricans would truly appreciate.

It feels like a little piece of home tucked into the heart of Atlanta. We sat outside to soak in the lively atmosphere of The Battery. The menu instantly reassures me that ve found the right place. From empanadas and mofongo to guava-and-adobo ribeye, tostones, and flan, there’s plenty to choose from. We asked our server, Shakil, to surprise us with two mofongo dishes. He returned with Mofongo Boricua with carne frita and Mofongo Verde with shrimp. The shrimp mofongo instantly became our favorite. We also ordered rice and beans, along with a side of tostones—we were in heaven. Everything was authentic, bursting with the flavors of the island. We finished our meal with a rich cafecito—Ave María, it was divine!

Would I Go Back? Absolutely—well worth the parking fee and then some. I'll definitely return to try new dishes, though I wouldn't mind having that Mofongo Verde with shrimp again and again. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and proud to work at a Puerto Rican restaurant—and I have a feeling most of them are Boricuas too.

About the Chef and Owner El Super Pan isn't just a restaurant; it's Chef Héctor Santiago's love letter to Puerto Rico. Born and raised in Río Piedras, San Juan, he came to Atlanta in 1995 and has spent decades shaping the city's Latin culinary scene. After experimenting with Southern food, Santiago realized his heart belonged to Puerto Rican cuisine — its flavors, stories, and soul.

Stop #1: Calle Latina – Decatur, Georgia

Aug 23, 2025

We kicked off our Puerto Rican food hunt at Calle Latina in Decatur. The vibe here was warm and lively, with colorful touches that immediately gave us that Latin café feel. The service was great—our server, Luis, who happens to be a native of San Juan, added a personal touch by chatting with us about Puerto Rico and even mentioned (with a little nostalgia) that they used to serve mofongo on the menu.

The menu itself leaned more Peruvian and Latin fusion, but we were excited to see plenty of small plates to share. We started with a tapas spread:

As we ate, I noticed a few nearby tables ordering the empanadas—they looked legit, flaky, and generously filled, a must try.

While Calle Latina doesn't bill itself as a Puerto Rican restaurant, it offers flavors that are familiar and comforting, with nods to the Latin Caribbean that make you feel at home. Overall, great ambiance, friendly service, and tapas worth sharing with friends.

Would I go back?
If I was looking for a more upscale dining experience with friends, Calle Latina could be a nice option. The ambiance has a polished feel, and the tapas-style menu makes it easy to share plates while enjoying cocktails or wine. While it didn’t completely transport me to Puerto Rico, the atmosphere and service could make it worth another visit for a night out with good company.
