September 2026 Vol. 1 · Issue 1

¡La Isla!

Your monthly guide to everything Puerto Rico

Hand-curated for travelers, expats, and Puerto Rico lovers everywhere

¡Hola! September is here — and Puerto Rico is glowing. Hurricane season is active (keep an eye on the Atlantic), but between squalls the island is lush, green, and half as crowded as peak winter. This month we're spotlighting the coffee capital of Puerto Rico, a sea cave full of Taíno petroglyphs, and the best coconut dessert you've never heard of. ¡Buen provecho!

Restaurant of the Month

La Casita Blanca

Santurce · San Juan
La Casita Blanca
Calle Tapia, Santurce · Open Tue–Sat · Cash-friendly

A legendary neighborhood gem tucked into a residential block in Santurce, La Casita Blanca has been feeding San Juan since 1955. The menu is handwritten daily on a chalkboard. This is old-school Puerto Rican comida criolla at its purest — no fusion, no foam, no pretense. Just serious food served in a bright yellow room that smells like someone's grandmother's kitchen.

What to order
Mofongo con camarones al ajillo, arroz con gandules, habichuelas guisadas. If tembleque is on the dessert list, get it.

Stay of the Month

Hacienda Tamarindo

Vieques, Puerto Rico
Hacienda Tamarindo
Vieques Island · Boutique · 16 rooms · From ~$200/night

Perched on a hilltop above the Caribbean, this plantation-style inn is Vieques at its most romantic. The 16 rooms are airy and simple — ceiling fans, locally made furniture, louvered windows. The pool terrace has a view that makes you question every life choice that led you to live anywhere else. No TVs. That's intentional.

Place to Discover

La Cueva del Indio
La Cueva del Indio
Arecibo · North Coast · Free to visit

On the dramatic karst coastline west of Arecibo, sea caves carved by centuries of Atlantic waves shelter some of the finest Taíno petroglyphs in Puerto Rico. The carvings — faces, sun symbols, and geometric patterns etched into the rock — are over 1,000 years old. The ocean pounds the cliff face below. It's a genuinely extraordinary place, and almost no one from outside the island knows it exists.

Getting there
Route 681, Arecibo. Park roadside, short walk to the coast. Go at low tide. Wear shoes with grip — the rocks are uneven and slick near the water.

Puerto Rico Spotlight

This Month's Municipality
Yauco
Southwest · Pop. ~35,000 · "La Ciudad del Café"

Yauco is Puerto Rico's undisputed coffee capital — and one of its most visually striking towns. The municipality produces some of the island's finest shade-grown arabica beans, and in recent years has transformed its hillside streets into an open-air mural gallery. The colorful murals climbing its steep staircases have turned Yauco into an Instagram staple — without sacrificing any of the small-town charm.

Taste of Puerto Rico

Tembleque
Coconut milk pudding · Traditional dessert · Year-round

Silky smooth, lightly sweet, and perfumed with cinnamon — tembleque (from temblar, "to tremble") is Puerto Rico's great underrated dessert. Made from coconut milk, sugar, cornstarch, and salt, it's traditionally set in a mold and unmolded at the table with a dusting of cinnamon on top. It costs almost nothing to make and disappears from the table in minutes.

Where to find it
Any fondita or traditional restaurant, most supermarket bakery sections, and every holiday table in Puerto Rico.

Made in Puerto Rico

Café Lareño
Lares, Puerto Rico · Family-owned since 1958

Grown in the shade-covered highlands around Lares at 2,000+ feet elevation, Café Lareño has been roasting Puerto Rican mountain coffee for over 65 years. The beans are arabica, the process is slow, and the result is a cup with low acidity, deep chocolate notes, and a sweetness that makes you understand why Puerto Rican café used to be served to the Spanish Royal Court. Find it at specialty shops island-wide.

Travel Tip

Book the Vieques & Culebra ferry early — or fly

The public ferries from Ceiba to Vieques and Culebra are inexpensive (~$2–5 each way) but notoriously unreliable and sell out fast during holidays and weekends. If your Vieques trip is time-sensitive, book a short-hop flight instead — Cape Air and Vieques Air Link both fly from SJU and Ceiba for $50–100 each way and take 20 minutes.

Cabo Rojo Lighthouse

"The Faro Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo, built in 1882, stands on a limestone bluff above turquoise salt flats. At sunset, the white tower turns amber and the shallow sea below goes electric. It's one of the most photogenic spots in the Caribbean — and you can walk right up to it."
